Noter:

The Scottish ship's captain and merchant Sander Dich (aka Alexander)
was one of Svaneke's most prominent citizens and as such found his
last resting place beneath the church floor. His tombstone is now to
be found in the graveyard leaning against the north wall; it is made
from red sandstone, measuring 197x120 cm, and engraved with symbols
from the Evangelists, as well, two time-worn coats-of-armour can
still be recognized. The original Old Danish inscription states:
"Jeg vedt at herunder ligger begrafven erlig oc Welfornemme mand
Sander Dich borger oc invaner i Svanicke paa Borringholm oc er
barnfød i Sckotland i Deytert som salig udi Herren hensof den 12
Maius Anno 1612 Gud gifve hannam med alle tro christne en gledelig
opstandelse paa den yderste dommedag hans alder 41 aar."
Translated to english: "I know that hereunder is buried the
honourable and distinguished Sander Dich, citizen of Svaneke on
Bornholm and born in Scotland at Dysart, gone to God in Heaven on May

12 in the year 1612 - God grant him and all true believers a joyous
resurrection on Judgement Day, he was 41 years old."
The gravestone has plenty of room for an additional inscription, but
the space remained unused, presumably because Sander Dich's widow
Karina Didrichsdatter re-married. Sander Dich was one of the many
Scottish captains engaged in the freight-trade across the North Sea
and the Baltic Sea. His birthplace, now spelled "Dysart", was the
harbour for numerous freighters according to the Customs and Duty
records of the Sound (between Danmark and Sverige). Even before 1600
Sander Dich must have had connections to Bornholm, as records from
Hammershus Lens dated 1598/99 show that Sander Skott (as he was often

called) was fined 9 Dalers for assaulting a swedish captain. In the
records from the Sound custom and duties Sander Dich (Skott) appears
numerous times. For example in 1590: "Alexander Skott of Dundee, came

from Knigsberg." In 1591 he came from Danzig and again in 1596
carrying ballast. During the Kalmar War with the swedes, we find
Sander Dich as supplier of Danzig beer (Danzigerl) to the navy. The
Hammershus records from 1611 (the first year of the war) show a
receipt dated July 27, where Hans and Sander Skotte, citizens of
Svaneke, have signed for 26 Rigsdalers received as payment for
"Dantsøl", as delivered to Peder Galt, captain of the "Penitentzen".
