Michael Hansen Lau/Lou later called himself Carl Hansen Lau, as told
in "Tapetbog af Carl Hansen Lau". Carried to be christened by
Christiane Jensdatter of 21' Selvejergårds (Slg.) plot, Vestermarie.
Godmother: Karen Jensdatter, ibid. Godfathers: Peder Hansen, farmer
at 20' Slg., Klintegård, Vestermarie; and Mahler West, farmer at 4'
Slg., Sparregård, Nylars. Confirmed in Nylars church on October 3,
1847; in which he was credited with "God Kundskab og Opførsel" (Good
Knowledge and Behaviour). It also says he was a peasant farmer
(bonde) at 33' Slg. Tingfogedsgård's parcel, along with his parents.
He told of being an apprentice of master-mason Hasager in Rønne; he
must have lived at home in Nylars during this time as no record is
shown of him leaving the until April 14, 1853 - when, at 20 years
old, he left Nylars to apprentice in København. After eight months in
the city he returned to Nylars as a full- fledged mason; he received
his Journeyman-Mason papers, dated September 28, 1853. Four years
later, in 1857, he became a Master- Mason. On October 21, 1874 Rønne
Building Commission states that the bricklayer C.H. Lau applied to
rebuild a house on Møllegade (two stories, "6x6 alen"), but the
request was turned down. However by 1876, now known as Carl Hansen
Lau, he had become a member of the Rønne Building Commission and took
an active part in their decisions. Several cases on the agenda of the
