Noter:
Jacob Hovaldsen was born in København circa 1718-20, and he obtained
his education there as well. Looked in the Vor Frue, St. Petri, and
Helligånd parish registers for baptism,
nothing found. He was married in Rønne to Kirstine Poulsdatter in
1744, but did not become a citizen (borger) there until January 10,
1749. The "Borgerskabet" record for "Jacob
Howaldsen" gives his age as 29 (born circa 1719/20) occupation
(erhverd) as "Maler", and states that his place of origin
(oprindelsessted) was København. We can also find
mention of him in 1771 as a decorative and portrait artist (maler og
skildere), and that in 1776 he painted the pulpit for Knudsker
Church. In the census of 1787 Jacob was listed
as being 68 years old and living at Strandgade 382 (that street now
called Silkegade).

He had close ties with the island's watch and clock-makers, and both
his son Poul and grandson Jacob became watchmakers; as well, his
daughter Annicke married Christian Due,
one of the island's most famous clock-makers. In the probate after
Ole Henrichsen's death in 1777 we find a bill from Jacob Hovaldsen in
the amount of 5 Rigsdalers for the painting
two clock-cases.

For a number of years he and Henrich Johan Møhlen were the only two
decorative artists living in Rønne, and thus have decorated a great
many of the clock-cases of the famous
baroque style Bornholmer-clocks.
