After working in a gold mine in the district he joined the Post &
Telegraph Dept. in 1895 becoming a foreman in 1899. He married
Alexandrina Crozier who was born 12/4/1869 in County Down, Ireland,
in 25/1/1899. Martin George was engaged in reconstruction of
telegraph and telephone lines in and around Dunedin and was later
transferred to Gore, Invercargill and Oamaru to cover the surrounding
areas in setting up new lines of communication. In 1911 he returned
to Dunedin as senior overseer of the Otago district and was in charge
of all outside work in the change over to the Automatic system when
the majority of overhead cables were placed underground. He was
awarded the B.E.M. at the time of the Silver Jubilee of the late King
George V in 1935
