LUCY DEVINE BENSON
Lucy Devine Benson (Issac, Jense Peter) was born 4 October 1899 in
Newton, Cache County, Utah to Issac Benson and Lucy Amanda Atkinson
in the rock house built by her grandfather Peter Benson.
Her brothers and sisters are as follows: Clara Christine, Darcy
Issac, Alfred Lynn and Ivan Jesse.
While growing up in Newton, Devine said that she and her cousins
Maude Barker Jorgensen and Phyllis Larsen Hunter had such good times
together. She loved Cache Valley. Devine loved to go to the Danish
LDS church meetings with her grandmother; Kersten Benson. She said
the Danish people from all over the valley came to the meetings. She
loved to hear them sing and bear their testimonies. She always
remembered the sweet spirit that was there even if she couldn't
understand it all.
They lived in the rock home which her father inherited until he died
on his 39th birthday of stomach cancer. A few years later her mother
re-married to James E. Stewart of Teton City, Idaho. After moving to
Teton City, her mother had 4 children by Mr. Stewart.Jesse, Ila, Alta
and Alton (twins). Alton died soon after birth. Mr. Stewart had a
large family by his first wife; so it was a large household. After
coming to Idaho, Devine met Albert J. Nelson and they were married in
the Salt Lake Temple 16 January 1918. Their children are: Don
Albert, Ford Benson, Max Clyde, Lucy Mae, Chester Wayne and Mark J.
All the boys, except Don served in the military. His health wasn't
good enough. Devine enjoyed her family and church. She loved writing
letters and receiving them. She enjoyed poetry and good literature.
They always grew a nice garden and did a lot of canning. Albert
(Ole) worked for the county road department.
He died suddenly of a heart attack at age 45 years. Devine was
lonely. On 14 April 1953, she married Walter T. Burrell in the Idaho
Falls Temple. He was living in Los Angeles so she moved there. They
enjoyed temple work and served a stake mission. She also served in
the Primary. She died at Los Angeles 9 Mar 1977 and is burried in
the Teton Cemetery.
